On January 9th, the İmzir State Opera and Ballet presented the performance titled “Coffee Love” at the Elhamra Stage, with the contributions of Toper Machinery Industry, delighting the people of İzmir.
The Coffee Love, performed with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Coffee Cantata Air from Suite No. 3, Gavot I and Gavot II, and the Mi Major Violin Concerto music, took the stage for the first time in İzmir on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at 8.00 PM.
In Bach’s Coffee Cantata, written in 1735 and premiered the same year at Cafe Zimmermann in Leipzig, coffee addiction, perceived as a social issue in the eighteenth century, is humorously depicted. In the Izmir performance, the music of Bach’s Coffee Cantata is combined with Air, Gavot I and Gavot II from Suite No. 3, and Mi Major Violin Concerto to create a performance named Coffee Love.
The plot of Cofee Love, set in a cafe in Leipzig in the eighteenth century, unfolds as follows:
In a time when drinking coffee (especially for women) goes against the etiquette rules, Lieschen, a coffee addict, agrees to marry Erzahler, whom she fell in love with at the cafe, if he allows her to drink coffee. Additionally, the lovers need permission from Lieschen’s father, Schlendrian, for their marriage to take place.
Obtaining permission from her father will not be easy; the happy ending will only come after a series of challenges.
The known history and trade of coffee have continuously evolved since the 1300s. Coffee, following petroleum, stands as the world’s second-largest commodity. Thanks to its unique characteristics, coffee has become an integral part of significant social structures.
It holds a crucial place in personal life, meetings, conversations, and gastronomy. Its influence has even extended to art and politics, leading to periodic bans.
The musical composition in this album is a tribute to the documented history of coffee.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Composer Cumhur Bakışkan for his substantial support and dedicated work in preparing these musical pieces.
In dedication to all those contributing to the development of the coffee world, especially the hardworking individuals in the coffee industry.
